Fish-Eye Artworks Inspire Eye Care

Alluring fish-eye lenses, with varying levels of translucency and as large as 8 ft wide, the Orange County Museum of Art exhibits the parabolic lens works of Fred Eversley, who was a pioneer of the space and light movement. As a teenager, Fred took Jell-O and spun it on a turntable in his father’s laboratory basement. At the time, this experiment no doubt was inspired by Isaac Newton, who contributed to modern physics using his own trials with a bucket of water and rope. As a result of Fred Eversley’s moment of curiosity, it produced a concave hollow in the Jell-O that became his very first artwork (despite not knowing it then). 

Fred pursued studies in engineering first, then sought to be an artist later on. He used his original experiment as a teen to inspire future ones that didn’t involve Jell-O, but instead liquid plastics in molds tinted with color. Fred would then spin them on modified turntables, creating parabolic forms that he polished by hand.
