Our vision plays a vital role in our daily lives, and when it comes to changes in how we see, it’s important to pay attention. The retina is a thin layer of tissue in the back of the eye that plays a key role in sending visual information to the brain. According to our renowned Newport Beach retina doctor, if problems develop, they can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. Knowing the warning signs can help us act quickly and protect our sight.
Sudden Loss Of Vision
One of the most urgent signs that something may be wrong is a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. This could happen in minutes or over a few hours. Conditions like retinal detachment, vein occlusions, or severe bleeding in the eye can cause this. If we experience this symptom, it is important to seek immediate care.
Increase In Floaters Or Flashes
Most of us see floaters from time to time, those small spots or threads that move across our vision. A sudden increase in floaters, especially when combined with flashes of light, can signal a retinal tear or detachment. While occasional floaters are common, a noticeable change in number, size, or frequency should be taken seriously.
Dark Or Shadowed Areas In Vision
Seeing a dark curtain or shadow moving across the field of vision is often linked to retinal detachment. This symptom can progress quickly, and prompt treatment is critical to preventing further vision loss. If we notice a shadow or dark area that wasn’t there before, it’s time to get checked right away.
Distorted Or Wavy Vision
Straight lines appearing bent or wavy can be a sign of macular degeneration or swelling in the retina. The macula, located in the center of the retina, is responsible for sharp central vision. Any changes in how we see shapes or lines should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Changes In Central Vision
Difficulty focusing on faces, reading small print, or seeing details in the center of our vision may signal a retinal condition. This could be due to issues such as macular degeneration or diabetic eye disease. Gradual changes in central vision often go unnoticed at first, so regular eye exams are important, especially if we have risk factors like diabetes.
Blurry Or Hazy Vision
Blurred or hazy vision that doesn’t improve with glasses could indicate swelling, fluid buildup, or bleeding in the retina. These symptoms may progress slowly or occur suddenly, depending on the cause. Identifying the source early allows for more treatment options and better outcomes.
Straightforward Steps To Protect Our Sight
If we notice any of these changes, we shouldn’t delay making an appointment. Even mild symptoms can point to a condition that needs attention. Annual eye exams help detect retinal issues before they become serious, and urgent visits can address sudden changes before permanent damage occurs.
At Retina Associates of Orange County, our board-certified Ophthalmologists are committed to helping our patients maintain healthy vision. If you are experiencing any of these warning signs or if it’s been a while since your last retinal evaluation, schedule an appointment with us today. I would like to share my experience with Dr. Desmond Edward McGuire, a Retina Specialist, who has been treating my mom for macular degeneration in both eyes for the past 8–10 years. We have consistently found him to be an excellent doctor, very knowledgeable, caring, and attentive to her needs. We also want to recognize how nice and helpful the staff is. On most visits, we hardly ever have to wait and the appointment is typically completed within about 30 minutes. Overall, the experience has been very smooth and reassuring for our family. We truly appreciate Dr. McGuire and the entire team for their support and professionalism over the years.Posted on Google![]()
